The Dark Arts: 13 Contemporary Gothic Artists You Need to Know
An appreciation of the modern makers bringing their darkest imaginings to life
By: The Lace Ledger Staff
In celebration of International Artist Day on October 25, we're raising a glass to the creative minds who give form to the otherworldly and beauty to the unexpected. From classic oil on canvas to experimental mixed-media works, artistic expression knows no bounds, and neither does the gothic imagination. Here, medieval romanticism finds new life alongside surrealist visions, while the natural world inspires creations that are equal parts enchanting and unsettling.
We've curated a shortlist of contemporary artists whose extraordinary portfolios deserve your attention (and patronage), each bringing their own interpretation of dark subject matter to life. Take a leisurely stroll through our virtual gallery and discover a few works you might be tempted to bring home.
Editor's Pick: Jesse Mockrin

Medium: Oil painting.
With the technical mastery of a Baroque painter and a modern feminist perspective, Jesse Mockrin revisits art history to challenge how women have been portrayed. Her paintings borrow the drama of the Old Masters while questioning the stories they chose to immortalize. We had the pleasure of exploring her exhibition Echo at the Art Gallery of Ontario in our feature, Baroque Rebellion at the AGO: Jesse Mockrin and the Art of Feminine Agency, last year.
A Closer Look: Tribute (2025)
At first glance, Tribute appears to be a simple floral still life. Upon closer investigation, its deeper meaning is revealed. Every plant in the arrangement has a history of use in conception, contraception or abortion, recalling centuries when women relied on botanical knowledge to exercise some control over their reproductive lives. Mockrin grew the plants herself in her home garden before painting them in homage to seventeenth-century Dutch artist Rachel Ruysch. Beneath the beauty of the bouquet lies a history of herbalism and female bodily autonomy, preserved in plain sight.
