Dressed for Downpour: Dark Feminine Rain Gear Designed for Stormy Weather
Patent trench coats, cathedral umbrellas and storm boots prove that bad weather has never stood in the way of style for the darkly inclined
By: The Lace Ledger Staff
The sky has been grey since breakfast as rainwater slides down storefront windows while someone in an office tower quietly regrets wearing suede. Sidewalks shine like wet pavement in a classic film noir. Most would agree it’s positively miserable outside. How delightful. It’s finally time to wear the good coat ;).
From patent trenches to skull-handled umbrellas and studded rain boots built to weather the storm, these pieces make a rain day something to look forward to.
Umbrellas
A great umbrella should muster a moment it opens. This season’s strongest options lean heavily into stained glass canopies, occult motifs, haunting silhouttes and sculptural handles shaped like skulls, serpents and scorpions, with standout styles from Luxbrella, Witchwood Bags, VampireFreaks, Kreepsville 666 and independent Etsy makers.

Raincoats
Raincoats are considerably more appealing once glossy waterproof finishes and razor-sharp tailoring enter the equation. Brands like RainSisters, Mackage, Rains, AllSaints and independent designers on Wolf & Badger and Etsy are trading forgettable outerwear sculptural sleeves and dramatic circle skirts designed to move beautifully through bad weather.

Boots
There is no need for the hardworking rain boot to resemble something purchased moments before a camping trip. Labels like Dr. Martens, Hunter Boots, Rogue + Wolf, Merry People and Bogs are bringing studs, embroidery, high-shine finishes, gothic prints and platform soles into the category, liberating waterproof footwear from an era of looking aggressively practical.
Rain gear has traditionally occupied one of fashion’s least glamorous corners. Functional. Sensible. Usually boring beige.
Fortunately, we’ve found a few designers that don’t agree. A tailored rain coat changes the entire mood of a stormy morning while an umbrella becomes an integral part of the outfit instead of an afterthought grabbed beside the door in haste. Even flooded sidewalks feel slightly more tolerable when approached in a pair of boots with style and function.
Grey skies may ruin plenty of outfits this season, but theeeeeese ones were built for them.
