Cathedral-Core: Gothic Fashion’s Ode to Architecture
How gothic cathedrals inspire the runway, the wardrobe and the home

World Architecture Day (October 6) is a celebration of the structures that shape our lives and our imaginations — and in the world of fashion, few inspirations loom larger than the gothic cathedral.
Rising in popularity this season under the banner of cathedral-core, we see runway looks evoking stained glass hues as well as patterns inspired by soaring spires and ribbed ceilings.
From couture gowns traced with echoes of ornamental stone work to ready-to-wear silhouettes modelled after vaulted arches, the fashion world is turning to stone (literally) for inspiration.
The cathedral has always been the gothic heart — a monument not only of faith, but of art, and ache. Think of Notre-Dame de Paris, her flying buttresses like outstretched wings, or the towering facades of Cologne Cathedral, whose twin spires pierce the sky. Yet hidden gems hold equal magic: St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague glimmers with jewel-toned glass and labyrinthine stonework, a site less sung but no less haunting. Cathedrals are compulsory to gothic culture because they embody the dualities we love — heaviness and grace, shadow and light, endurance and transcendence.
This season, cathedral-core rose as one of the most commanding aesthetics of the FW25 runways, where designers wove sacred grandeur into fashion’s fabric.

Simone Rocha drew on altar lace and structured leather, shaping silhouettes that carried the weight of ritual. Richard Quinn included looks in crimson, blooming with florals that echoed stained glass at dusk. Dolce & Gabbana leaned into their signature mourning drama with corseted bodices, crucifix embellishments and black lace that blurred devotion with seduction. Erdem turned to romance, layering lace and embroidery in a way that recalled the intricate beauty of gothic windows. Each designer approached cathedral-core differently, yet together they reminded us that fashion still kneels before grand spectacle.
The runway isn’t the only place where cathedral silhouettes live. Brands like Disturbia, Regal Rose, Restyle, Vide Noir and Lively Ghosts bring gothic architectural motifs into wearable form. Expect chokers reminiscent of rose windows, corsets with pointed arch seams, earrings that echo lancet windows and handbags embossed with vault-like tracery. Cathedral-core is about carrying a piece of gothic grandeur wherever you go.

Architecture doesn’t just belong in your wardrobe. Bring Cathedral-core into your home with cathedral and basilica-shaped candles, or hang vintage stained-glass panels in your windows. Wall hangings and gothic-arch lighting from creators like The Blackened Teeth turn any room into a chamber of reverence. The home becomes a sanctuary, a place where style and ritual merge under vaulted ceilings — even if only imagined.

For World Architecture Day and beyond, we remember that fashion and architecture are kin: both are frameworks we live within, both shape our sense of identity, scale and beauty.
Cathedral-core is more than a trend; it is an invitation to wear history, to walk with shadow and light stitched into your seams. Raise your gaze — and your wardrobe — skyward.
